One August evening I was on the wrong side of an MVP ticket because I had treated the race like a maths problem. My candidate had the better WAR, the better wRC+, the better defensive metrics, and a higher slugging percentage. He finished third in the voting. The two men ahead of him played for clubs that won their divisions, gave better post-game interviews, and had been featured in three national broadcast windows during August. None of that turns up on a stat page, and yet all of it determined the result.

MVP and Cy Young futures are voted markets. The Baseball Writers’ Association of America’s roughly 30 voters per league produce ranked ballots after the regular season ends, and the ballots, not the stats, determine the result. Numbers feed narrative, narrative feeds votes, votes determine outcomes. The decimal-odds market on these futures is essentially a prediction of voter behaviour, not a prediction of player performance. Confusing the two is the most common amateur mistake I see, and it costs.

Voter Patterns and Narrative Bias

I keep a small black book of voting patterns I have noticed across the past decade. None of them are formal rules. All of them are real. Voters reward team success – a player on a 95-win club gets votes a player on a 75-win club does not, even when the underlying numbers are identical. Voters reward narrative arcs – comebacks from injury, late-career resurgence, breakthrough seasons – more than steady excellence year after year. Voters reward triple-crown-flavoured numbers – big home-run totals, big RBI lines, gaudy batting averages – even when sabermetric stats suggest a different player was more valuable.

The Cy Young pattern is slightly different from MVP. Cy Young voters care about wins, but they care about ERA more, and they have grown more comfortable with FIP-flavoured analysis over the past five years. A pitcher with a 2.50 ERA but a 3.20 FIP is harder to sell than a pitcher with a 2.80 ERA and a 2.60 FIP, because voters increasingly read both numbers. wOBA components – singles weighted at 0.882, doubles at 1.252, home runs at 2.037, walks at 0.691 – feed into the slash-line measurements that make a hitter look “MVP-ish” to voters who care about batting average alongside slugging.

Narrative bias also runs against players based on coverage patterns. A player on the West Coast playing late games is systematically under-covered by East Coast media, which is a meaningful share of voters. A player on a small-market club with limited national broadcasts is similarly handicapped, regardless of statistics. This bias does not appear on a Baseball Reference page and is invisible to anyone who treats the market as pure maths.

The decimal-odds prices reflect narrative more than they reflect numbers. A player with the best statistical season in his league might still sit at 4.00 in October because the voters have signalled, through interviews and column inches, that they are leaning toward a teammate or rival. Backing the better player at decimal 4.00 against the narrative pick at 1.80 is essentially betting that voters will change their minds in the final two weeks. They rarely do.

WAR Pace as the Pricing Anchor

That said, the market does not entirely ignore numbers. WAR – Wins Above Replacement, in either of its main public formulations – is the closest thing to a pricing anchor in the MVP and Cy Young markets. A player on pace for 8.5 WAR is functionally the favourite unless team success is dramatically against him. A player on pace for 6.0 WAR is in the conversation. A player below 5.0 WAR rarely wins, regardless of narrative.

The market translates WAR pace into decimal odds with reasonable consistency. Each marginal WAR point above 6.0 typically compresses the price by a meaningful chunk. The first player to reach 7.0 WAR in late August often becomes the betting favourite within forty-eight hours, even if the second-place candidate has clearer narrative pull. By Labour Day, the WAR leader is usually under 2.50, and that compression is largely irreversible unless the leader gets injured or scuffles down the stretch.

For Cy Young specifically, the pitcher analogue is FIP-driven WAR plus ERA reputation. A starter with a 6.5 WAR pace and a sub-3.00 ERA is the favourite full stop. A starter with the same WAR but a 3.50 ERA is in the race but at longer prices, because voters still anchor on ERA over FIP in close calls. The closer the field, the more ERA matters; the more dominant the WAR leader, the less ERA matters.

Mid-season WAR pace is a noisy estimator. A player on pace for 9.0 WAR through the All-Star Break has often regressed to a 7.0 finish, which is still elite but is a different price. Treating the All-Star pace as the definitive number is a trap. I usually re-rate every two weeks through the second half, watching for whether the leader is sustaining the pace or fading toward something closer to his career baseline.

Team Record as the Hidden Variable

I once held a ticket on a player having a top-three statistical season in his league at a 7.50 decimal price. His team finished under 0.500. He won zero MVP votes – not third place, not fifth, zero. The voters had collectively decided that a non-contender’s MVP candidacy was illegitimate. The ticket was dead in October.

Team record is a soft but consistent filter for MVP voters. Roughly four out of every five MVP winners across the modern era have come from teams that made the post-season or finished within a couple of games of doing so. The exceptions exist – there have been individual seasons so dominant that voters could not justify denying the award even on a losing club – but the exceptions are rare enough that betting against the pattern is structurally unfavourable.

Cy Young is more permissive. A starting pitcher on a sub-0.500 team can and does win the award when the gap between his ERA and FIP and the field’s is wide enough. Voters separate pitching value from team success more readily than hitting value from team success, because pitcher run support is conspicuously a team factor outside the pitcher’s control. A 25 % loser-team penalty applies to MVP candidates; the comparable penalty for Cy Young candidates is roughly 10 %.

The 2026 award futures will face the usual ambiguity early in the season. By July, with team records firming up, the markets will compress around candidates from contenders. Backing a candidate from a non-contender at long prices in March, however attractive the underlying numbers look, is usually a March bet on a player who will lose to a teammate of voters’ favourite by November. Division winners and Wild Card teams are weighted equally in voter behaviour, broadly speaking. The team being in October is what matters, not which slot they occupy. A 91-win Wild Card team carries roughly the same MVP-narrative weight as a 95-win division winner.

Worked Example: A Mid-Season Cy Young Bet

Suppose by mid-July a starter has compiled a 2.40 ERA, a 2.65 FIP, a 5.0 WAR pace projecting to 7.5 by season end, and his team is 8 games above 0.500. The decimal price on Cy Young opens at 3.60 at a UK book.

Implied probability is 1 ÷ 3.60 = 0.278, or 27.8 %. I rate the field. The closest competitor is at 3.20 with a 2.55 ERA and a 6.5 WAR pace; the third candidate is at 6.50, somewhat off the pace. A weighted projection across the remaining ten weeks of the season – accounting for variance, potential injuries, and historical Cy Young narrative – gives my candidate roughly 30-33 % real probability.

The 30-33 % real against 27.8 % implied is a thin overlay. Whether to stake depends on bankroll discipline and tolerance for tying up capital from July to November. A £20 stake at 3.60 returns £72 with £52 profit on roughly a 31 % outcome. Across four to five Cy Young positions per season, each at similar thin overlays, the expected return is positive, but the variance is meaningful – you will lose three of every four bets even when right, because that is what 30 % probability means.

I would not stake more than 1 unit on a single Cy Young futures position. The variance is too high and the lock-up cost too long to justify larger sizes. The discipline is to spread small positions across realistic candidates rather than concentrate on one ticket, even when one ticket looks correct.

If a competing candidate gets injured between the bet and award night, the price compresses dramatically and the market often offers a hedge window. Hedging a Cy Young ticket is harder than hedging a World Series ticket because the field cannot be paired off cleanly – the maths involves multiple opposing tickets rather than a single binary opponent.

When the statistical gap between the candidate and the field is wide enough – a sub-2.40 ERA, a leading FIP, an elite WAR pace – voters have historically separated pitching value from team success and given the award regardless of the win-loss column. The penalty is meaningfully smaller for Cy Young than for MVP, where contender status is closer to a hard requirement.

When do MVP odds usually compress?

MVP futures typically compress in three windows. The first is the All-Star Break in mid-July, when the WAR leader through the first half locks in narrative momentum. The second is the post-trade-deadline period in early August, once team records firm up and contenders separate from non-contenders. The third is mid-September, when the leading candidate’s price often falls below 2.00 as voters’ end-of-season ballots become predictable. Backing a candidate after the September compression rarely produces value.
